DETAILS
Client: Economic Research Institute for ASEAN (ERIA) - Research Knowledge Centre for Marine Plastic Debree (RKCMPD)
Date: 2024
Resposibilities: Creative direction, video editing, animation and motion graphics, voice over.
THE BRIEF
Using the voice over script provided - create a short introduction video for ERIA-RKCMPD that fits the design and branding of the upcoming website, and the units communication strategy. The video will be published to the organisations website, social media channels, and shown at conference presentations.
RESEARCH
Before beginning the video, it was necessary to some of my background research into both the organisation and the intended audience. As the video was aimed for a global audience from a background consisting of mostly of South East Asian, East Asian, and some Western nations too, it was necessary to focus my research into cross-cultural considerations in media and design.
This meant I had a responsibility to consider things such as:
- methodologies and tools in cross-cultural design,
- developing awareness of personal cultural biases,
- cultural insights into the target audience, including things that my be potentially offensive.
PRE-PRODUCTION
1 - Inspiration
I began by finding and reviewing work from similar organisations. Using Figjam, I identified strengths and weaknesses, and noted interesting features that I might consider incorporating into the video.
2 - Brainstorm
Next I conducted a quick brainstorming session where I noted ideas in reference to the voice over script.

3 - Storyboard
Using these notes I composed a rough storyboard that supported these ideas with imagery.
4 - Mockup
Within Figma, I created a series of high-fidelity mock-ups that showed the exact design and flow I wanted the video to follow. This would present a reference point as I redesigned and animated the video in After-Effects.
PRODUCTION
Animation
All animation was completed in After-Effects. Careful atttention to detail was taken to ensure motion and timing fit the organisations brand and style.
Sound Design
By layering sound effects and applying audio modulating techniques, I aim to support the visual elements and convey a sense of motion.
Colour Grading
I use colour grading to maintain visual consistency, and establish a look and feel for the video that supports the orgnisations brand image.
Feedback and Revision
The video has had several draft versions to accomadate for feedback. Adjustments to timing, images and colours were some of changes made.
Learning Outcomes
In completing this project I achieved several key learnings:
1. Gained industry experience producing a commercial grade piece of work that can be used by my host organisation.
2. Learnt to apply my skillset to an industry in which I had no previous experience.
3. Develop a greater understanding of the considerations and sensitivities in cross-cultural design.
4. Insight into the issue of plastic waste in the Asia Pacific region.
